What Does the World Need More of?

Megan Harvey, Reporter

During the holidays, we are all reminded of how important it is to be generous, selfless, and above all, thankful. However, even with these morals fresh in our mind, it can still be difficult to ignore the seemingly constant negativity and hardship that exists in our world today. It can be frustrating to want to be thankful for the world around us, while virtually unavoidable media bombards our lives with societal and political adversity. The feeling of detachment and hopelessness that many have for the world today is unfortunately not one that is uncommon. These conflicts can become overwhelming, which is why it is so important to continue to remind one another of the things that make the world a better place than some sources claim that it is.

Not only is speaking positivity into existence vital, but taking action is just as imperative, if not more so. The importance of spending time with family and loved ones is a value that most people uphold. However, appreciating and giving to those who may not play a direct role in one’s life is also significant. This could be exemplified through doing something as generous as donating and volunteering time to those in need of more than the typical Christmas gift, or as simple as wishing a stranger a happy holiday. Even after the holidays have passed, acts of kindness similar to those are just as important. When the world grows dark, it’s up to us to brighten each other’s days, appreciate the people close to us, and be the change we want to see.
