Underrated Underdogs at Alden High School Athletics
At AHS, some sports are truly underdogs.
All athletes have overcome colossal adversity and challenges, but many have not earned the publicity, attention, and recognition they deserve. Matthew Cole and Skylar King have both recently broken pool records. Peter Amrhein and Ava Dima both played a practically perfect undefeated tennis season. Sylvia White is a true sharpshooter, hitting the bullseye time and time again. Hannah Bishop has achieved many successes throughout her bowling career. Matthew Strasser has led his cross-country team to states twice, which has never occurred before in Alden cross-country history.
These athletes have accomplished incredible things that the Alden public may never know. I interviewed underrated athletes. Here is what some of them had to say:
“Bowling is very underrated because a lot of people don’t know that Alden has a bowling team, and we could use a lot more people at matches cheering us on, “said Bishop, a junior on the Alden varsity bowling team.
For senior Peter Amrhein, one of the toughest parts of being on an underrecognized team is the experience of playing for a small crowd. “No one except our families have shown up and if you know how to play,” he said. “We are a really fun sport to watch, but a lot of people won’t even give the time of day to try to watch us.”
You heard it right from the athletes themselves: They are sick and tired of the lack of publicity they receive. Keep up the amazing work throughout the sports season. Go Bulldogs!
