Alden High School’s new Vocal Jazz Club, led by Ms. Kelly Nieman, is striking a chord with chorus members eager to explore a unique musical experience. Focused on the art of improvisation and scatting, Vocal Jazz brings the human voice into the rich tradition of jazz music, offering students an exciting opportunity to blend harmony, rhythm, and creativity.
Members of the club are thrilled to have this addition to the school’s music program. “There’s always been a jazz band, and I thought it would be really cool to do the vocal ensemble version of that,” Maddy Jones shared. Ms. Nieman agreed, saying, “We’ve had an established jazz band for a long time at the high school, and it’s time the chorus got a chance.”
For their winter concert, the group is preparing songs like Scat Me Do and the iconic Linus and Lucy from Charlie Brown. Many members are especially excited about Linus and Lucy, citing its familiar melody, vibrant harmonies, and fun energy.
Despite the early morning rehearsals, Vocal Jazz has quickly become a favorite for its members. The camaraderie, coupled with the chance to sing challenging and exciting songs, keeps students coming back. “My favorite part is hanging out with my friends and singing cool songs,” Brooke Cotton noted.
As the club grows, members hope more students will join and take advantage of this creative outlet. Vocal Jazz meets every Thursday morning before school, and Ms. Nieman is already brainstorming ideas for future performances and opportunities to showcase the club’s talent.
With its passionate members and a repertoire full of energy and soul, Vocal Jazz is poised to become a standout addition to Alden High School’s vibrant music program.
