In Mrs. Siuta’s Career and Financial Management class they are doing a simulation to help kids experience what adults call the “real world”. This simulation includes paying various bills such as utilities, phone bills, and rent. Students are all employed by the same people making the same amount of money. Students have various options which can result in a very poor student or a slightly wealthy student. Students have the option of buying cable or not or which phone company they want to use. This simulation shows that the best company may not be the best fit for that student depending on what else they have to account for. This simulation was created by two business teachers to show kids that being independent is a lot different than having a parent to fall back on. When I asked Mrs. Siuta how this simulation will help students after high school, her response was simply that “it doesn’t get anymore real than this”.  Mrs. Siuta said that “most students don’t like this because they can’t depend on their parents as much”. The simulation ends on December 15.
