Coach’s Report
March 8, 2019
The winter sports season has finally come to a close with the Varsity Boys and Girls Basketball teams, Boys and Girls Bowling team and Boys Swimming team all finishing their respective seasons this past week. I spoke with all the coaches to get a recap on each season.
From Coach Stone with the Boys Basketball team, the team was able to finish the season with their heads held high. The team struggled however with having such a young team and was only able to win 2 games with 19 games being lost. Leading the team was senior and captain Lucas Jurek. Lucas was top 3 on the team in all major statistics. Other key players for the Bulldogs were freshman Jacob Baker and Walker Wrest. These boys continued to improve their game as the season went on and boosted their confidence playing against much older players on varsity.
From Coach Cayea with the Girls Basketball team, the season was very exciting with a 7-14 record overall and 7-7 record within the division. The team was very competitive with most of the games being within 10 points. The team had to face a lot of adversity with several players going down with injury and illness. The team was led by point guard Grace Pastuszynski, perimeter players Allie Petschke and Haley Tyburski, and inside players Shelby Kerston and Emma Diebel. With a lot of players going down to injury or illness, players like Caroline Wrest, Bri Boucher, Emerson Bartsch. and Jaime Bennett played a huge rule in stepping in and performing.
From Coach Stoldt with the Boys Bowling team, the boys were co-division champs with the Maryvale Flyers. This was the boys first division championship since 2010. Leading the team was senior captains Alex Rzepka and Drew Yambor as well as fellow seniors Andrew Gabalski and Adam Fisher. The boys team had a lot of depth with averages on the A and B teams being very close. The boys unfortunately did not perform at sectionals placing 13th out of 24 teams in the division. The high averages this season include Alex Rzepka with a 206, Andrew Gabalski with a 198, Marty Rzepka with a 189, and Eric Jones with a 187. Alex was also won the Sportsmanship Award for his division.
From Coach Stoldt with the Girls Bowling team, the girls were 4th in their division with a 4-6 record against some tough competition. Leading the team as a Captain is freshman is Sydney Skimmer. The girls at sectionals place and impressive 6th out of 22 teams in their division. Sydney herself finished an amazing 7th overall out of 150+ girls and just missed the cut to states. The girls top averages were Sydney Skimmer with a 191, Carissa Fisher with a 152, Emma Sheehan with a 149, and Joslyn Yambor with a 143. Sydney broke 3 school records including girls high set, girls high average, and 6 game set as well as winning Sportsmanship award for her division as well.
From Coach Bennett with the Boys Swimming team, the team finished 2nd in their division and 5th overall at ECIC competition. Leading the team was Junior Sam Cansdale who led the team with 141.5 points and was the only swimmer that qualified for sectionals. Other notable swimmers were Seniors Ben Krysczak and Bobby Adams, Sophomore Connor Streit and 8th grader Matt Cole all were key swimmers to the team by earning crucial points, motivating other swimmers, and showing great sportsmanship award.
