2019 Boys Varsity Soccer
October 21, 2019
Everyone is familiar with the Friday night homecoming football game. However this year, the boys varsity soccer team played a home game on the turf as well. With the regular season half way complete, I decided to check in with the boys and see how the team is doing. The team is led by Coach Turton and captains Zach Bennett, Luke Goals, Cole Kissel, and Matt Derenda. As of right now, the team’s record is 5-6-1 and the leading scorers of the season are junior Matt Derenda and sophomore Nate Turnbull. The boys recently won their Friday night game against Pembroke with a score of 2-0. Matt Derenda scored in the 30th minute and was assisted by Nate Turnbull. The second goal was scored by Cole Kissel in the 75th minute with an assist by Griffin Brody. The team’s defense and goalie, Ben Chowaniec worked hard to secure another shutout for their season and Chowaniec finished the game with eight saves. Following the game, I talked to coach Turton and asked about his thoughts on the season. He discussed the impact the turf has made on the season and said that he believes it will prepare the team for sectionals, as sectional games are typically played on turf fields. I also spoke with senior captains Bennett and Goals and asked them about their thoughts on the game. The boys were happy with how the team worked together on Friday and are looking forward to their sectional run. The boys play their senior night on October 18th at 7:00 so be sure to come out and support!
