The Beginning to ‘Behind the Badge’
October 16, 2015
On Thursday October 15, 2015 part of our WACS News team traveled to Downtown Buffalo to begin their mini-series, “Behind The Badge”. Anchors Max Gucinski and Delaney Keppner along with Producers Kelsey Crawford and Max Northem with the addition of Lyle Grant planning to peruse a career in law enforcement, attended the visit. Our team traveled to the Erie County Holding center, Communications/Dispatch Center and the Narcotics unit. Under the leadership of Deputy Vogl and Mr. Masci the representatives from WACS News were able to experience how the holding center operates and why it is such a vital part of the county’s criminal justice system.
Throughout the tour, the roles of various members of the Sheriff’s Office were explained and we witnessed first-hand their daily struggle to contain inmates and create the safest environment possible. When asked to reflect on the trip, Producer Kelsey Crawford said “it was very eye-opening, and changed how I view our law enforcement and respect them even more”. WACS News also interviewed members from the Communications Center about their role as the true first responders. We met with the Narcotics Unit who explained their operations as well.
Video from this trip and many others will kick start our mini-series “Behind the Badge” which will be aired in early November, featuring the different departments of the Erie County Sheriff’s Office. WACS News will continue this behind the scenes look throughout the year taking a closer look at the Aviation Unit, ATVs, Bomb Squad, K9 Unit, School Resource Officer, Snowmobile Unit, Dive team, SWAT unit, and Marine & Jet ski Unit.
The footage taken from these different units will feature some of our WACS News staff exploring different roles of the job such as Lyle Grant featured above in shackles within the Transportation Unit Offices. Students from the Robotics club will work together to duplicate the functions of a ‘bomb’ robot. Also, you can expect Max Gucinski and I in full SWAT and scuba gear later this year! Keep up to date with ‘Behind the Badge’ by following us on Facebook or Twitter to learn more about our law enforcement heroes and their huge role in our community.

I think that this is a brilliant idea. It’s a great way to show our community that holding centers are important to the criminal justice system. It’s also very nice of the Robotics Club to make a duplicate the functions of a ‘bomb’ robot.

I think this will be a really good mini-series I like how you are going over so many topics. I can’t wait to hear about the bomb squad and the SWAT unit. I also think it is really cool how the robotics club is working to duplicate the functions of a ‘bomb’ robot.

I’m happy that people in our school have the opportunity to go and see this and learn what it is about. This new series can help people that would be interested in a job in law enforcement to learn about it. I hope there would be something like this for a field I would want to go into.

This article was very well written and really interesting! I did not realize that there were so many police units. I bet that it was very fun and educational to go to the Erie County holding center. The robotics club making the bomb robot sounds really interesting and educational, especially if you want to grow up to be an engineer. Great job Wacs News, keep up the good work!

I think this was a good idea to come to the holding center! Give the kids a inside scoop on law enforcement. Also this is vital to the young kids that have wanted to peruse law enforcement. I just think this opportunity should be given tot everyone to experience something like this.
