Every two years, Alden Central School hosts the Athletic Wall of Fame ceremony to celebrate the achievements of former athletes, coaches, and community members who have significantly impacted the school’s athletic programs. This prestigious honor recognizes individuals for their dedication to sportsmanship, citizenship, and athletic distinction. To qualify, nominees must be at least six years removed from their time at Alden High School. This year, the school inducted four honorees who have demonstrated remarkable accomplishments in their respective sports.
The 2015 Varsity Softball Team, coached by Mr. Kryszczuk, was one of the honorees. Reflecting on the team’s achievements, Mr. Kryszczuk expressed pride in the team’s historic run to the state championship—the first in Alden’s history. “This is a huge honor,” Kryszczuk said, emphasizing the significance of the team’s journey after 48 years. He praised the athletes for their teamwork, sportsmanship, and chemistry, qualities that carried them beyond high school sports and into their adult lives. His advice to aspiring athletes is simple yet powerful: “Never give up on your dreams or your aspirations. Anything can happen if you firmly give 100%.”
Nick Orlowski, another inductee, was recognized for his contributions to Alden’s cross-country and track teams. Now involved in the community as a coach, Orlowski highlighted the rewards of coaching and watching athletes surpass expectations. “One of the most exciting things is seeing them reach limits they didn’t think they could reach and the joy on their faces when they cross the finish line,” he shared. His ongoing involvement in the Alden Community Scholarship Foundation, as well as his commitment to giving back, has solidified his lasting impact. “Seeing them come and support the community through the 5K race, through the chicken dinners and barbecues… handing out the scholarships at senior night and those awards, it’s really fulfilling,” Orlowski said.
The final honoree, Phil Zobrest, graduated in 2014 and excelled as a three-sport athlete. Known for his dedication in track and field, Zobrest earned the New York State small school championship in the discus throw in 2014. He was frequently seen putting in extra hours, either arriving early or staying late after practice. His hard work paid off, earning him a Division 1 football scholarship at Holy Cross University.
Alden Central School’s Wall of Fame stands as a tribute to these remarkable individuals and teams who have left a lasting mark on the school’s athletic legacy. Their accomplishments continue to inspire future generations of Alden athletes.
