During a school field trip to the Buffalo AKG Art Museum, Alden High School sophomore Claire Estrada had the unique opportunity to interview New York Governor Kathy Hochul. The trip, intended to provide students with an enriching cultural experience, took a poignant turn when the governor spoke about her visit to the museum on this particular day.
Claire began the interview by asking Governor Hochul what her favorite part of the gallery was. The governor shared that her visit had a deeper significance this time, as she was there to view an exhibit commemorating the tragic events of May 14, 2022, when a racially motivated attack at a Buffalo grocery store resulted in the deaths of 10 innocent New Yorkers. Reflecting on the exhibit, Governor Hochul said, “I am here to see the exhibit that reminds us of what happened on May 14th in 2022… Today is a more somber event to be able to walk through that exhibit and make sure we never forget.”
She also spoke about the need for ongoing healing within the Buffalo community and acknowledged the resilience shown in the aftermath of the tragedy. The governor emphasized the importance of using art not only as a form of remembrance but also as a pathway toward community recovery and growth. “This is important for me to nourish my soul as I return to my hometown of Buffalo whenever I can,” she noted. “To see and experience what my community has gone through, but also how resilient they are in rising back.”
Claire’s confident nature allowed her to seize this incredible opportunity to interview Governor Hochul, showcasing her determination as a member of WACS News. Rather than shying away from the chance to speak with a high-profile figure, Claire stepped up and asked meaningful questions, demonstrating her commitment to reporting on significant events affecting her community.
