In a recent video, Alden High School athletes Jess Okoniewski, Emma Przykuta, Jonathan Wasch, and Karly Westmiller shared their experiences moving up from Modified to JV sports, offering insights on the challenges, growth, and camaraderie that come with this transition.
For many, the shift to JV brought a mix of nerves and excitement. Trying out for JV sports was a new experience that tested their confidence, but the welcoming environment and team spirit made the transition easier. JV sports also introduced more complex aspects, like structured positions, faster rotations, and advanced game plays that required increased focus and adaptability.
The athletes agreed that JV demands more dedication and preparation compared to Modified. With the faster pace and heightened competition, they felt encouraged to step up their game, bond with new teammates, and work closely with coaches to improve their skills.
As advice to future JV athletes, they emphasized the importance of being yourself, embracing the challenge, listening to coaches, and practicing with purpose. Confidence and authenticity go a long way in JV sports, where each game is an opportunity to grow as an athlete and teammate.
Through their stories, these students show the resilience and dedication that define Alden High’s athletic community, inspiring others who will one day take their own steps into JV.
