In a recent WACS News segment, one of Alden High School’s history teachers opened up about his love for teaching, his journey back to his hometown, and his passion for history—particularly World War I. When asked about his favorite subject besides history, he mentioned music, showcasing a diverse range of interests that connect with his students.
Teaching in Alden is a full-circle moment for him, as he attended school here himself. He credited two influential teachers, Mrs. Mendez (formerly Ms. Starr) and Mr. Foss, as key inspirations for his path in education. Both educators, now retired, left a lasting impact, motivating him to bring the same dedication to his own classroom.
Regarding his favorite historical era, he chose World War I. He finds the blend of old-world traditions and new technology fascinating. The war’s combination of cavalry and modern weapons like machine guns and airplanes marked a monumental shift in warfare, moving the world into the modern age. This contrast between the old and the new in such a pivotal conflict captivates him.
The segment concluded with a classic history joke: “Why was King Arthur’s army too tired to fight? Because there were too many sleepless knights!” The teacher’s enthusiasm and sense of humor clearly make history class a lively experience for Alden students.
