In this week’s edition of Alden Athletes Unfiltered, Addy Bolles sits down with varsity volleyball player Kaylen Jaworowicz, who has made an impressive impact this season on Alden’s varsity team. Kaylen, who plays as a right-side hitter, explained that while her position is typically limited to the front row, her coach has her playing all around in both offensive and defensive roles. Positioned on the right side up front, she receives sets to spike the ball, while in the back row, she takes on a defensive position known as the “one,” covering the right side of the court.
Kaylen recently earned the title of Athlete of the Week, an honor she credits to her positive attitude and encouragement during practices. “I keep a good spirit and lift up my teammates,” she shared, humbly attributing her selection to her energy and dedication. After five years of playing volleyball, she finally made it to varsity this year, a milestone that she says pushed her to keep growing as a player and learn from her experienced teammates.
Under the guidance of a new head coach, Kaylen has seen significant growth in her skills and confidence. “Kayla has a lot of good drills, and she really brings us together as a team,” she said, expressing appreciation for the close bond the team has developed with their coach.
Currently leading her class with 34 aces, Kaylen attributes her success at the service line to consistency and staying calm under pressure. She looks forward to strengthening her game for her senior season by focusing on her vertical jump and attending open gym sessions to keep her skills sharp.
Kaylen also shared the mentorship role she has taken on for her “little,” Maddie Enzer, as part of the team’s big-little program. “I talk to her a lot at practices and help her with passing or whatever she needs,” Kaylen said, showing her dedication to fostering growth in younger players.
With the team’s first playoff game against Fredonia approaching, Addy noted that the opposing team has a sophomore standout with impressive stats. Kaylen remained unfazed, saying, “We just can’t get in our heads… I feel like if we really want to, we could win.” Confident and composed, she’s ready to bring her best to the playoffs, keeping her focus on team spirit and determination.
