In the latest segment of Athletes Unfiltered, host Addie Bolles sat down with sophomore hockey forward Emily Lysiak to discuss her role on the varsity team, her approach to balancing academics with athletics, and her aspirations for the future. Lysiak, who has been playing hockey for a decade, shared insights into her mindset both on and off the ice.
When asked about her focus during games, Lysiak emphasized strategy and teamwork. “Scoring is about looking for the net and not focusing on the goalie,” she explained. She also highlighted the importance of creating opportunities for her teammates by “deceiving the goalie, making them move one way, and then passing the puck the other way.”
Balancing hockey with school can be challenging, but Lysiak credits her coaches for prioritizing academics. “They make sure you’re on top of your things,” she said, noting that she utilizes study halls and advisement to stay organized.
As the team gears up for the season, Lysiak emphasized the importance of team bonding and preparation. With many new players joining the squad, the focus has been on building chemistry, practicing power plays, and penalty kills.
Lysiak also reflected on maintaining sportsmanship while playing a competitive sport. “The only times I get physical in a game is if I’m standing up for a teammate,” she admitted, adding that she avoids unnecessary aggression.
Beyond school hockey, Lysiak plays for the Buffalo Regals and has her sights set on playing college hockey. Her motivation stems from a drive to reach her highest potential, whether that means competing at the Division I or III level.
One of the biggest lessons she’s learned? “Don’t take anything for granted,” Lysiak said, recognizing the fleeting nature of athletic opportunities.
