The highly anticipated Band-O-Rama concert is just around the corner! Set for Tuesday, March 4th, this event brings together the music talents from all grades at Alden High School for a unique and exciting performance. We sat down with Lillian Kochmanski to learn more about what makes Band-O-Rama special.
Band-O-Rama is a collaborative concert featuring the intermediate school band, middle school band, and high school band. Each group performs their own songs, and the night culminates in a grand performance with all the bands coming together for one massive number. Jazz bands also join in the mix, adding to the musical variety.
Lillian explains that while practicing for Band-O-Rama involves individual preparation, it’s a bit different from regular rehearsals. “The high school will record us playing at a certain tempo, and then the other schools use that recording to get the tempo they need to learn the song,” she says. This creates a unique challenge of not only learning the music but also adjusting to play alongside different groups.
She also notes that the effort put into Band-O-Rama is slightly more intense than typical concerts due to the extra coordination required between the various school bands. “It’s more of a give and take,” Lillian says, referring to the balance of confidence and timing needed when high schoolers and younger students play together.
Lillian also shared her thoughts on Mr. Larrabee, the band director, stating, “Mr. Larrabee’s awesome.” She was excited to have him back after a brief period when she thought he might leave, and she’s eager to see him lead Band-O-Rama for one last time.
If you’re wondering whether to attend, Lillian highly recommends it. “The Band-O-Rama is probably one of the coolest concerts because you get to hear everyone all at once, and overall, it’s just an awesome experience.”
Mark your calendars for March 4th and come support our talented students at this memorable performance!
