As the new school year begins, the Alden Substance Abuse Prevention Coalition is reminding families that education doesn’t stop in the classroom—it starts at home. In a powerful video message, Program Director Colleen Babcock urges parents to talk openly with their kids about the dangers of substance use and mental health struggles. “It’s happening to good kids from good families every day,” Babcock warns, emphasizing that early intervention can be life-changing. The Coalition offers youth-led programs, events like Red Ribbon Week and the Halloween Spooktacular, and ongoing opportunities for students to become community leaders.
Also featured is Meredith Howard, the Alden Family Center Coordinator, who highlights the importance of building strong relationships and connections for student success. From counseling referrals and parenting resources to emergency food and clothing support, the Family Center offers a wide range of services tailored to meet the needs of families in all stages of life. “Sometimes a simple question can lead to the support a family really needs,” says Howard. Together, the Coalition and Family Center are a vital part of Alden’s mission to keep students safe, supported, and thriving.
