Alden is Full “STEAM” Ahead
December 3, 2015
The first annual STEAM Career Fair took place on Friday, November 13th. There were 225 students in attendance from grades 9-12 for this in-house field trip. The event provided participants with plenty of opportunities to speak with professionals and ask questions about their careers.
There were hands-on demonstrations taking place all day in the technology wing. These allowed students to try out various tasks that are involved in different careers.
In addition, there were three panel discussions in which students received a lot of great advice from experienced representatives who shared how they transitioned from high school into their careers. Students were able to discover how they can better prepare themselves for technical jobs while in high school, such as by shadowing or internships. Professionals also told students what qualities they look for when hiring employees.
Overall, the event was very interesting and informative. The response from the students was overwhelmingly positive and Alden is looking forward to more STEAM Career Fairs in the future.

I was really interested in the people from E.C.C. They took mother boards out of different things and made a whole bunch of different games. They made tic-tac-toe, the casino game, and rock paper scissors shoot. That’s just what they could bring. It was pretty amazing on what they could do.

I was really interested in the people that came from E.C.C. What they did with the games that they made was amazing because it took some virtual games and made them into real devices. I really liked the casino game that the lights went around in a circle and you tried to stop it on the yellow light. They had robots there and games like tic-tac-toe and rock-paper-scissors. One of the people there had a device that took inputs and and make them outputs in binary. The people there had an example of a motion sensor that could detect objects within 10 cm. of the way it was facing.

This event was very informative and helpful for me. This event was very well thought out and very organized, good job to the people who made this possible. I hope that something like this happens again next year.

This event helped me see a lot of other job opportunities there are. It also gave me the chance to learn about them and talk to the people who had these jobs. This was a great event and I hope that it is held in the future years of my high school experience.

This type of event is only possible through the generous donation of time and energy from the participants above. Students have talked about how the event opened their eyes and minds to new educational and career path opportunities.
