Battle of the Books
April 4, 2017
It’s that time of year again, Battle of the Books is back at Alden Middle School. Battle of the Books had its 10th annual competition March 24th and March 30th. The Battle started with 10 teams including Los Libros Chicas, Key In The Jar, Stawitz’s Super Stars, Book Doctors, Book Worthy Bulldogs, and much more. Each having 3 to 5 students, with the goal to reach the finals on April 24th to face off against Orchard Park and Hamburg Middle School.
Battle of the Books is a great chance for students to have the ability to get with their friends and have a great time reading books. Having 5 different choices of books gives a variety of genres to students, so that may branch out in the world of literature.
Round 2 of this year’s Battle of the Books was the closet ever! Tied for first place with 74 points each, please congratulate team HAARM and Team NIL8. Behind by only ½, a point in 2nd place is team New Direction. Due to the incredibly close results, Mrs. Riggi will be taking the top three teams to compete in the championship at Orchard Park next month. Congratulations to teams HAARM, NIL8 and New Directions!!! Thank you to everyone who participated in this year’s Battle of the Books.
The teams read the following books:
- Fever 1793 by Laurie Halse Anderson
- Framed by Frank Cottrell Boyce
- Okay for Now by Gary D. Schmidt
- City of Ember by Jeanne DuPrau
- Amulet: The Stonekeeper by Kazu Kibuishi.

Great job on the story, Josh!
It’s great to see the kids getting so excited about reading. I love that there’s a graphic novel included for the first time ever.
Best of luck against OP and Hamburg!
