Every week, Alden High School selects two athletes, a male and female, as Athlete of the Week.

Here at WACS News, we wanted to take a deeper dive into what it takes to earn that title and highlight the weekly winners. This is the first in a series of student athlete spotlights meant to celebrate the achievements of our top athletic performers.

So, how do Alden athletes earn the title?

Co-Athletic Director Mr. Partell shared some insight into the process.

Good Athlete of the Week candidates, Partell said, “help to demonstrate some positive leadership characteristics, whether it’s on the field or on the court or on the range or whether it’s just through character.”

First up: Jacob Baker

Baker, a senior captain of the varsity basketball team, took home the for the week of Feb. 4 to 9. In an early February game against JFK, Jacob was the leading scorer with 22 points.

According the Alden Athletics website, led the team in rebounding with 14 points.

“He is the anchor for our defense and led the team with five blocks while consistently altering shots from the opponent,” Varsity Basketball Coach Tim Stone told the athletic department. “When Jacob is at his best, we are a hard team to beat. Overall, Jacob is the leading scorer, rebounder and shot blocker on the team.”
