Model United Nations is more than just an academic club—it’s an opportunity for students to step into the shoes of world leaders, tackling real global issues through diplomacy and debate. With Alden’s next competition set for March 18th at the University at Buffalo, members are gearing up for an event that will bring together 824 students from 41 schools, representing 74 different countries.
Led by advisor Ms. Williams and club secretary Jade Sivertson, Alden’s Model UN team prepares by researching global issues and learning how to confidently present their country’s stance. For some, speaking in front of a large group can be intimidating at first. “For the first two competitions that I went to, I didn’t speak at all,” one student shared. “I just watched and learned. Then, over time, I built the confidence to speak because I took my time and didn’t rush it.”
Each delegate must research their assigned country’s position on a given topic—whether it’s women’s rights, water crises, or natural disasters—and understand how their nation would interact with others on the issue. Preparation is key, with students bringing notes, resolutions, and essential supplies like paper and pens. Some conferences even require position papers, though rules vary from event to event.
Despite the challenges, the experience is rewarding. “I remind myself that everyone else is just as nervous as I am,” one participant explained. “So it doesn’t really matter. It’s just a bunch of people I don’t know.”
Model UN is open to anyone interested in global affairs, public speaking, or debate. New members are always welcome, whether they plan to compete or just want to observe and learn. If you’re looking to challenge yourself, gain confidence, and engage with world issues, Model UN might just be the club for you!
