The Bulldog Express is more than just a way for teachers to grab a morning treat—it’s a student-run business that helps develop essential vocational and functional skills. Led by members of Mrs. Marko’s class, the initiative started four years ago and has since become an important part of Alden High School. Not only does it provide hands-on learning for students, but it also raises money for the school’s PTO.
Each week, Mrs. Marko sends out an email to faculty, allowing them to place food orders from local businesses such as Tops or Alden Bakery & Café. The students then take charge of the entire process, turning these orders into a well-run operation.
From organizing an assembly line to packaging food and calculating totals, the students manage every step. They collect payments, make change, and personally deliver the orders to teachers and staff. Through this process, they gain valuable experience in customer service, money management, and teamwork.
For many students, the best part of the Bulldog Express is the connections they build with teachers and staff. One student says they enjoys the opportunity to interact with faculty and practice customer service skills.
Teachers and staff appreciate the Bulldog Express not only for the convenience but also for the relationships it fosters. Faculty members have expressed how much they enjoy engaging with students they might not otherwise meet. The program has created a welcoming environment where students gain confidence, independence, and valuable life skills—all while brightening the mornings of Alden High School’s faculty and staff.
With its combination of practical learning and community-building, the Bulldog Express continues to be a meaningful and successful initiative at Alden High School.
