The first day back from spring break at Alden High School took an unexpected turn when the school lost power. As the morning unfolded, classrooms were lit only by flashlights and natural light from windows. Teachers and staff quickly adapted, using creative methods to keep lessons running smoothly.
Mr. Sigurdson, a ninth-grade teacher, explained how he was managing without power. “It’s a bit tricky, but luckily we have some natural light through the skylights,” he said. “We’re making it work.” Mr. Sigurdson, who usually relies on digital resources, switched to Constitution workbooks from his predecessor, Mr. Foss. “We’ll be fine,” he added, even turning his class into an impromptu story time about King Charlemagne.
As the day progressed, Vice Principal Mr. MacCowan shared his thoughts on the situation. “We’ve been creative, but we’re doing alright,” he said. “I’m starting to see the lights come back on, so we’re looking forward to being fully powered again soon.”
Just as hope seemed to wane, the lights flickered back on. The power was restored, bringing a much-needed end to an unexpected but memorable morning.
