A 1992 graduate of Alden High School, Ben Canetti has lived a life defined by service, perseverance, and leadership. This year, he was honored as one of the school’s Distinguished Alumni Award recipients — a recognition well-deserved for a man whose journey has inspired countless others.
After graduation, Ben enlisted in the United States Air Force, following a long family tradition of military service. “I wasn’t the best student,” Ben admits with humility. “I didn’t really enjoy high school and had no plans for college. But joining the Air Force gave me direction and purpose.”
It was through his time in the military that Ben discovered not only discipline and focus but also a sense of leadership that would shape his entire life. “The Air Force didn’t just teach me how to fly or fix airplanes — it taught me how to grow up,” he says. “As you mature, you’re given more responsibility. That’s what made me a leader.”
During his years of service, Ben completed seven deployments to the Middle East, Iraq, and Afghanistan, flying C-130 missions that included special operations and counter-drug assignments alongside Navy SEALs in South America. “Anytime we had the chance to go overseas, I was the one who raised my hand,” he recalls. “It was difficult work, but I found meaning in it.”
Following his military career, Ben transitioned into civilian aviation, becoming a pilot for Delta Airlines. His work continues to take him across the country — from flying professional sports teams like the Arizona Diamondbacks and Buffalo Bills to connecting travelers worldwide.
Ben credits much of his success to the discipline he developed early on. “Pilot training is incredibly hard,” he reflects. “You learn quickly that whether you were a great student or not, you’ll have to study harder than ever. It’s challenging, but it teaches you the value of focus and priorities.”
Amy Canetti shares, “He’s a leader, a role model, and a father who leads by example. Whether he’s speaking on live TV, delivering a eulogy, or guiding our daughters through life decisions, he speaks from experience and from the heart.”
His influence extends far beyond his family. Elizabeth Canfield, who served alongside Ben in the Air Force, recalls his mentorship fondly: “He took me under his wing when I joined the unit at Niagara Falls. Working with him on the 2018 Air Show was one of the best experiences of my career. He opened doors for me and created opportunities I never imagined.”
Another colleague, Kevin Culley, credits Ben with inspiring his own aviation journey. “After meeting Ben, he encouraged me to pursue becoming a pilot. I owe my career to him,” Kevin says.
To Ben’s lifelong friend Matt Muscato, his success comes as no surprise. “When Ben puts his mind to something, he accomplishes it,” Muscato says. “He’s achieved great things, but he’s still the same person he’s always been — loyal, grounded, and genuine.”
From his beginnings as a directionless high school student to a decorated Air Force veteran and respected airline pilot, Ben Canetti’s story is one of resilience, growth, and inspiration. Through his dedication to service, his leadership, and his heart for others, Ben exemplifies the true spirit of what it means to be a Distinguished Alumnus of Alden High School.
