WACS Weekly Returns with New Anchors, Student Highlights, and Powerful Stories
WACS Weekly is officially back and better than ever, introducing new anchors Jack Kolarich, a 10th grader, and Jade Sivertson, a 12th grader, who opened the episode with energy and school pride.
The show began by recognizing the Athletes of the Week: Abby White for Girls Varsity Basketball and Tino McCarthy for Boys Varsity Hockey. Viewers then got to know Abby White through a featured interview, where she shared her favorite moment of the season—a comeback win against JFK after trailing by 18 points. Abby also discussed the challenges her team faces, including competing against taller opponents, demonstrating the team’s perseverance and determination.
The episode continued by highlighting the ongoing work of the WACS team, whose main priority is showcasing student-produced content from throughout the school year. This week’s WACS Project of the Week was the Buy Nothing Store, produced by Campbell Jones. The feature highlighted a free, donation-based store open to students, designed to promote sustainability, reduce waste, and strengthen the school community. Items available include clothing, accessories, games, and other donated goods, all provided at no cost.
Next, WACS Weekly introduced Alden’s new faculty and staff through another video produced by Campbell Jones. New teachers, counselors, administrators, and staff members shared what drew them to Alden, emphasizing the district’s close-knit community, welcoming environment, and pride in school traditions.
The episode then honored Alden’s Distinguished Alumni, featuring Ben Connet (Class of 1992) and Corey Simon (Class of 1995). Ben Connet, a U.S. Air Force veteran and Delta Airlines pilot, shared his inspiring journey from high school to military service and professional aviation, emphasizing discipline, perseverance, and leadership. Corey Simon, an associate professor at Duke University and pain scientist, reflected on his career path, the importance of keeping an open mind, and how life after high school can take unexpected but rewarding turns.
The broadcast also included a heartfelt farewell to Officer Ashley Peele and her therapy dog Kojak, recognizing her ten years of service as Alden’s School Resource Officer. Students and staff shared memories highlighting her compassion, dedication, and positive impact on the school community.
Finally, WACS welcomed Deputy John Birdsy as Alden’s new School Resource Officer. The segment introduced Deputy Birdsy’s background in law enforcement and his commitment to student safety, open communication, and maintaining a supportive school environment.
Jack Kolarich and Jade Sivertson closed the episode by thanking viewers for tuning in and encouraging everyone to stay connected for future updates. With student achievements, meaningful stories, and a strong sense of community, this episode of WACS Weekly captured the heart of Alden High School.
