Happy Black History Month!

Happy Black History Month!

Brandi Persutti, Reporter

Since 1976, the month of February has made it’s many trips around the sun as Black History Month, compared to the celebrated Negro Week that began in 1926, in honor of the everlasting impact and achievement that African Americans have had throughout American History. Fun Fact: Black History month is celebrated in February because that was the month in which Abraham Lincoln and Fredrick Douglass were born. From political actions, literature, music, art, and social impact, African Americans have been making there mark since History can remember. It is important that we give recognition and remember these important icons and events of American History because we have came a far way since the first African American slave was introduced in Virginia in 1619. Almost 400 years later we have learned of the change through figures from Fredrick Douglass, to Harriet Tubman, through the Harlem Renaissance, from Jackie Robinson, Malcolm X, James Meredith, Rosa Parks, Martin Luther King, and Barak Obama. These icons, as well as many others,  have pushed through multiple civil rights movements to fight for not only their own, but equality and liberation of anyone that was faced with discrimination. As dark as the times were, as modern day Americans we must learn from our mistakes, learn to apologize, forgive, accept, acknowledge, and appreciate one another, no matter the culture , race or color of skin. As the month goes by be sure to take the time  acknowledge some of the remarkable accomplishments made from some of the most influential African Americans in History.
