Alden High School tries it’s best to keep the community, staff, and students informed on everything that happens around Alden and our school district. While many things are lighter, there’s also the fair share of serious issues around the district. One of those issues being school safety. School safety is crucial to any district, and it’s an entire team effort from everyone in the system. This is why Alden High School holds a yearly safety week to ensure that the staff and students remain properly educated on how to properly respond to the many emergencies that could occur in the school. From fire drills to lockdowns, there are many different situations a student may have to face. Here are a few tips for all students on how to handle some of the situations that may occur.

Fire Drill: This is one of the most common drills that a student will have to face. Many have been performing this drill since they were in kindergarten, and the “rules” of the drill have not changed much at all. Be sure to receive the proper directions from your teacher on how/where to exit the building. Exit to the designated location quickly and quietly. If the designated exit is blocked, reroute to the nearest exit.

Lockdown: This drill is one of the more serious drills. When you hear the signal over the loud-speaker, all students must congregate and sit in one corner of the room, out of sight of the windows and doors. Remain there quietly until the door is unlocked and you’ve received word from a school official.

Lockout: This is a simple drill to follow. A lockout means there’s a danger from outside of the building. Remain in your classroom, and all the exterior doors remain locked. No one is allowed to be walking around the school.
Continue class activities.

Bomb Threat: This is also an extremely serious drill. If a bomb threat is received by a student, they must seek official attention immediately. If administration receives a threat, contact authorities immediately. If you can maintain contact with the individual posing the threat, try to find more information out such as if it’s a serious threat, where is the bomb, who is responsible, when will the bomb go off, etc.

Those are 4 key emergency situations that a student may have to respond to. For more information, contact a teacher or a school official. Be sure to always follow WACs News for all of Alden’s events, and stay safe Alden!
