BREAKING: Aldens Got Talent Re-Scheduled for May 10th

Spencer Hrynczak, Producer

Citing last minute conflicts, including scheduling, AHS Theatre Club officers announced that ‘Alden’s Got Talent’ will be rescheduled from April 20th to May 10th.

In this announcement on Friday we did learn more about the Variety Show. We learned that WACS News will again be sponsoring the event allowing news anchors Alex Leigh and Brooke Meyer to take the stage.

Meyer said we can expect “a similar style show from last time. I think we found a format that works. We’re pairing incredible student performances with hilarious teacher skits. Our WACS News team is working on hilarious video shorts that’ll be played at the show and there will still be surprises around every corner.

This means we can expect a lot of the wildly successful approach of the show hosted by Max Gucinski in 2016, paired with the incredible talent of the teacher band ‘Turton’ taking the big stage. WACS News Producer Sam Bizub confirmed that we can expect WACS News’ original “BUS THOUGHTS” video to return along with “TEACHERS READ MEAN TWEETS”.

Bizub said “we’re definitely going to hold on to those because they were so popular. We’ll change them up of course, but they’ll make an appearance. We’re really excited about a few other brand new ideas we have”.

We have confirmed that teacher skits will also be included on top of the funny digital short videos as well. With the similarities from the last show, here’s what we might be able to expect:

“Incredible Student Performances”

Social Media was on fire in 2016 as people tweeted and post memorable moments from the variety show, ‘Alden’s Got Talent’. The wide range of student performances included Senora Hazen’s Spanish 4 class’ lip dub, Brooke Meyer blowing us away with an acoustic performance, The Evolution of Hip-Hop with Paige Rzepka and Brooke Strausbaugh, and many more.

“Hilarious Teacher Skits”

A large addition to the new format of ‘Alden’s Got Talent’ launched in 2016 was that there would be a teacher skit as a transition in between each performance. Many of the teachers who performed in these skits would make a reappearance (well, sort of) in the large teacher dance later. However, Mr. Domino, Mr. Simon, and Mr. Kern joined in on the live fun as well. The skits were all improv skits that they had no prior knowledge of. Gucinski (host) would call the teams out on stage for each skit and read scenarios to them at random. A majority of the skits were concepts borrowed from “Whose Line Is It Anyway?”, “Hollywood Game Night”, and “The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon”. The skits varied from “Infomerical” [VIDEO] to “Helping Hands” [VIDEO] and more!

“Gucinski Carries The Show With Laughter “

Screen Shot 2016-04-09 at 9.49.32 PMWACS News Anchor, Max Gucinski, ran out at the start of the show to the theme from the former hilarious classic “The Late Show with David Letterman” which would prove to be a perfect mood setter for the rest of the night.  After working hard with Mr. Masci, Mr. Currin, Kelsey Crawford, and the rest of our production team there was emphasis on keeping the show moving quickly while also keeping the mood light-hearted. Gucinski has been working to script his show with co-writers like Matt Lamb, Ryan DesJardins, Mr. Currin, and Mr. Masci. He made an appearance for transitional purposes in between each act with witty one liners, both planned and unplanned.

Screen Shot 2016-04-09 at 8.33.51 PMThe Alden High School Senior’s presence on stage was comfortable for both him and the
audience who is used to seeing Gucinski in the spotlight. The audience definitely saw a looser and more comedic version of the performer, however, on Friday night. He would open the show “all business” explaining how it would work, but didn’t stray from making witty puns. He was also blunt about expressing the teacher skits were “seen before on live TV and (they’re) completely ripping them off” and wasn’t afraid to not hold back jokes about Mr. MacCowan and the school cafeteria renovations. Guests leaving the performance told producers that they “didn’t stop laughing all night”. Gucinski would also play a big part in Ian Johnson’s prom-posal and regularly joked with stage crew members as they worked to quickly transition in between skits. Its most fitting that he would end his last moment in the spotlight with firing off what was perhaps the funniest joke of the night in his sign-off skit with Carl Aldinger, “Thank You Notes” [VIDEO].

“Turton”

Alden High School has been buzzing about the return of the “teacher band”, ‘Turton’. Turton first debuted as a musical sensation at the variety show in 2008 for a benefit known as Val’s Pals. After a few brief pop-up’s after that event and hectic lifestyles taking the stage, the band ultimately stopped playing together. That is until they “reUNYTed” for the UNYTS Donate Life dance in March.  Vocalist Mr. Domino and drummer Mr. Partell sat down with Zach Bennett for an interview in March to discuss the “10-year reunion” tour as they’ve been jokingly calling these performances. Reporter Kayla Derenda was also in attendance at the Donate Life dance for the band’s performance in the High School cafeteria on a temporary stage constructed by Alden High School Stage crew, led by Lead Technician Max Northem. A glimpse of that performance is available HERE. From cafeteria to the big stage, the band says they are working on all new material to take to the big stage on May 10th.

The rescheduled date is May 10th at 7pm. Doors will open at 6:45pm and tickets are $5 at the door. You can also skip the line at the door by purchasing online at aldenschools.org/boxoffice. Acts wishing to join the show are welcome to sign up outside of the auditorium for auditions!
