The National Association for Music Education formally recognizes the month of March as “Music in our Schools Month”. According to the Association’s website, the purpose of the observance is to “raise awareness of the importance of music education for all children – and to remind citizens that schools is where all children should have access to music.” It is a great opportunity for student musicians to showcase their talents, and for the community to celebrate our school’s music programs.

Alden started out the month with the 3rd annual Band-O-Rama on March 1st. The concert combined all of the bands from grades 4-12.  They gathered in the gym for two performances and were led by three conductors, Mrs. Nieman, Mrs. Nye, and Mr. Larrabee. Together they performed popular songs such as Star Wars and Crazy Train. There was even a special appearance from Intermediate School principle, Mr. Mikulski, on the triangle.

Originally scheduled as two separate concerts, the March 9th wind day brought the Middle and High School bands together once again to perform on the same night. Monday March 13th was deemed Band-A-Palooza. Each band had their own moment in the spotlight as they transitioned from the Middle and High School Jazz bands, to the 6th, 7th, and 8th grade bands, to the High School concert band and Wind Ensemble. The night ended with a special announcement from 8th grader, Peter Tolsma, that school would be closed the next day due to the impending snowstorm.

Alden’s music program is full of many talented and passionate musicians and educators, which has been truly demonstrated during Music in Our Schools Month.
