This week, Alden High School proudly recognizes two exceptional athletes for their outstanding performances in their sports.
Samuel Farrell (Varsity Boys Swimming)
Sophomore Sam Farrell has been a key contributor to Alden’s swim program since joining as an eighth grader. Sam’s versatility allows him to excel in multiple events, always giving his best effort and frequently finishing in the top spots. He has taken on a variety of races, from technical events like the 100 butterfly and 100 breaststroke to sprints such as the 50 and 100 freestyle.
Sam has qualified for the Class C meet in seven different events and for Sectionals in five. At the ECIC Championship on Jan. 25, Sam and his team took 2nd place overall. He earned three 2nd-place patches, one 3rd-place patch, and was part of the 200 medley relay team that broke a 42-year-old school record. In Alden’s meet against Starpoint, he secured first place in two individual events and both relays.
Sam’s dedication and leadership make him an invaluable asset to the team. Best of luck in the championship meets!

Claire Whiteford (LIDA Girls Varsity Ice Hockey)
Junior Claire Whiteford is in her third year on the Lancaster/Iroquois/Depew/Alden (LIDA) Girls Ice Hockey Team and was selected as an assistant captain this season. Her leadership and skill helped lead the team to a strong week of competition.
On Jan. 27, Claire recorded one goal and two assists in a 5-2 win over St. Mary’s. The next day, she scored twice in LIDA’s 8-2 victory over Niagara County. She continued her impressive play on Jan. 30, scoring two more goals in a hard-fought 4-3 loss against reigning sectional champions Kenmore/Grand Island.
Claire’s determination and leadership have been instrumental in LIDA’s success this season, as the team currently holds an 8-3-1 record. Keep up the great work!
