If you’ve been to an Alden football or basketball game, you’ve heard Kevin Okiec, even if you’ve never seen him. For 35 years, the 1992 Alden graduate has been the voice of the Bulldogs, and his calls have carried well beyond Alden as one of the best-known public address announcers in Section VI.
On Oct. 16, Okiec was inducted into the Alden High School Athletic Wall of Fame. WACS reporter Brooke George interviewed him for the tribute video that played at the ceremony.
Okiec got the job almost by accident. His brother had been announcing Alden games for a few years, and the fall after Kevin graduated, his brother handed it off. “Why don’t you go do it?” Okiec remembers him saying. He admits he was nervous at first, knowing his voice would carry across the entire crowd, but he says he knew almost right away that it was for him. Within days of that first game, he was already looking forward to the next one.
The call he remembers most was his first playoff game at the stadium, the home of the Buffalo Bills, where his voice filled the building.
His approach has stayed the same the whole time: name the player who made the tackle, who carried the ball, who threw the pass. “Just to try and get everyone a little bit of that recognition that they deserve,” he told Brooke.
Okiec said he always thought of the Wall of Fame as a place for people who did something on the field. Hearing from friends since the announcement changed his mind. “35 years is a long time to do anything,” he said, “and I’ve had a lot of fun.”
Okiec also thanked his family and his Alden family for their support.
