For four seasons, the Alden Bulldogs had one game plan: get the ball to No. 20. Sean Guyett, Class of 2002, was inducted into the Alden High School Athletic Wall of Fame on Oct. 16. “I was thrilled,” he said. “I’m honored to have this opportunity to be remembered there at Alden.”
WACS reporter Frankie Jay interviewed Guyett by video call for his tribute video.
Head coach Adam Stoltman brought Guyett up to varsity as a freshman, and instead of sitting on the bench, he was part of the game plan from the very first game. His big break came as a sophomore, when the starting running back went down and Guyett took over at tailback.
By the time he graduated, Guyett had rushed for 3,404 yards and scored 242 points. In 2001, he was named first-team All-Western New York, second-team All-State and Class B Offensive MVP, and he was a Connolly Cup finalist. He’s quick to share the credit with his fullback and his offensive line. “It’s not an individual sport,” he said. “It’s definitely a team sport.”
Guyett also started for the basketball team, made sectionals in track and totaled 1,005 pounds in powerlifting at 178 pounds. He told Frankie about the day a coach doubted he could bench 225 pounds without training for it. He did it on the spot.
His last memory of high school football is lying on the field with the goal line across his face mask, inches from a playoff berth.
Guyett credits his parents for getting him to every practice and game, and his dad for guiding him along the way. Today he coaches his own kids and others, looking for ways to give back what he learned.
