This week, Alden High School recognizes two exceptional athletes who have demonstrated extraordinary skill, leadership, and determination in their respective sports.
Sylvia Witmer (Varsity Girls Cross Country)
Senior Co-Captain Sylvia Witmer continues to be a force on the Varsity Girls Cross Country team. As the top female Bulldog at both Cross-Country Invitationals she has participated in this season, Sylvia has consistently delivered impressive performances. In our recent ECIC Division V competition against Tonawanda, she claimed victory with her fastest 5-kilometer time of the season, further cementing her place as one of the top runners in ECIC Division V.
Coach Emilio Mancino praises Sylvia for her dedication and leadership, which have been integral to the success of the team’s undefeated season so far. Her commitment to her sport and her team is unmatched, and she continues to inspire those around her with her perseverance and skill.
Ava Gauld (Varsity Girls Tennis)
Senior Co-Captain Ava Gauld has proven herself as a standout leader on the Varsity Girls Tennis team, consistently rising to the challenge as the team’s first singles player. Ava faces each school’s toughest competitors, but her mental toughness and determination shine through. After a narrow loss to JFK earlier this season, Ava worked hard to improve, returning for their rematch with a decisive victory. In a recent double-header against Tonawanda, she dominated her matches, winning 8-2 and 8-0.
Coach Ashley Kuma commends Ava for her work ethic, leadership, and positive attitude. Ava not only excels in her own matches but also takes time to support and cheer on her teammates, making her a true role model on and off the court.
Both Sylvia and Ava represent the spirit of Alden High School athletics, showing what can be achieved through hard work, dedication, and a passion for their sports. Congratulations to these outstanding athletes!
