More more than three decades, Mr. Bill Larrabee has been a guiding light in Alden High School’s music department, inspiring students and colleagues with his exceptional talent, humor, and dedication. Known for his unflappable nature and remarkable concerts, Mr. Larrabee has been a pivotal figure in shaping the school’s music program.
“I first met Mr. Larrabee when I started here as principal,” Alden High School Principal Kevin Ryan recalled. “Bill is one of a kind. His way with students, his sense of humor, and his talent make him irreplaceable.”
Students also shared fond memories of Mr. Larrabee’s influence.
“He encouraged me to join band and start percussion,” said Class of 2024 member Hannah Cuthbertson. “Without him, I wouldn’t have become a music teacher.” Trombonist and AHS Senior Gabriel Nieman added, “Mr. Larrabee is like a father to me, always making me laugh and helping me become a better musician.”
His impact extends beyond music, fostering a supportive environment and deep connections within the community. Longtime colleague Bridget Nye praised Larrabee’s influence on his students and colleagues. “When you teach with someone for 26 years, you develop routines and habits,” she said. “Our music department complements each other, and Bill’s strengths will be greatly missed.”
Mr. Larrabee’s ability to connect with students while maintaining professionalism has left a lasting impression. “He makes you laugh, he makes you smile, and at the end of the day, you’re a better musician because of him,” Cuthbertson said.
As Mr. Larrabee prepares to retire, the Alden community faces the challenge of filling his significant shoes. “Mr. Larrabee is an incredible mentor, teacher, and leader. The hard question is, what are we going to do without him?” said Madeline Jones, who produced, shot and edited this documentary.
Though his physical presence will be missed, Mr. Larrabee’s spirit and contributions will continue to resonate in the halls of Alden High School, leaving an enduring legacy for future generations of musicians and educators.
